  • History:  Built by the Chola emperor Raja Raja I between 1003 and 1010 AD, the Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as the Big Temple, stands as a testament to the empire's power, wealth, and artistic brilliance.

  • It was constructed to honor Lord Shiva and was the primary royal temple during the Chola reign. The temple's construction was a monumental undertaking, involving thousands of artisans, craftsmen, and laborers.

  • Rituals:  The Brihadeeswarar Temple continues to be an active place of worship.

    • Abhishekam:  The sacred bathing of the massive Lingam is a crucial ritual, using substances like milk, curd, honey, and sandalwood paste.

    • Aarti:  Elaborate Aartis are performed several times a day, accompanied by traditional music and chanting.

    • Puja:  Offerings of flowers, fruits, incense, and lamps are made to the deity.

    • Special Occasions:  Festivals like Maha Shivaratri, Pradosham, and Brahmotsavam are celebrated with great pomp and ceremony.

  • Architecture: The temple's architecture is pure Dravidian, showcasing the pinnacle of Chola craftsmanship.

    • The Vimana:  The most striking feature is the towering Vimana (tower above the sanctum), which rises to a height of 216 feet (66 meters), making it one of the tallest temple towers in South India. It's a masterpiece of engineering, constructed without the use of mortar or cement. The stones are interlocked and held together by their weight.

    • The Kalash:  The massive Kalash (finial) at the top of the Vimana weighs several tons and is believed to be made of a single stone.

    • The Nandi Mandapam:  The temple houses a huge monolithic statue of Nandi, the bull, which is Lord Shiva's vehicle.

    • The Gopurams:  The temple has several Gopurams (gateway towers), each adorned with intricate sculptures.

    • The Sculptures:  The temple walls are covered with exquisite sculptures depicting deities, celestial beings, dancers, musicians, and scenes from Hindu epics.

  • Legends and Folklore:

    • The Shadow: One of the most fascinating aspects is the belief that the Vimana's shadow does not fall on the ground at noon. While this is often attributed to the architectural design and the Earth's tilt, there are also mystical explanations.

    • The Underground Passage:  Local legends speak of a secret underground passage connecting the temple to the royal palace.

    • The Sacred Geometry:  The temple's construction is said to be based on sacred geometry and cosmic principles.

  • Significance: The Brihadeeswarar Temple is not just a place of worship; it's a living monument to the Chola dynasty's grandeur and their deep devotion to Lord Shiva.

  • It’s a treasure trove of art, architecture, and history, attracting visitors and scholars from around the world.
